The soda-stream is back. And it’s not just for kids. We’re talking wine here. Yes, really. Heston Blumenthal and Jamie Oliver have both been going on about how you can turn cheapo wine into something sparkling and sophisticated simply by popping it in a Soda Stream and giving it some bubbles. Well, why not? Champagne is fizzy because it undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle – not a cheap process to manage. But much sparkling wine costing up to a tenner a bottle has bubbles added by what is often jokingly known as “the bicycle pump” method. Why not save money and do it yourself? My friend Helen McGinn, aka The Knackered Mother, wrote a brilliant piece for the Daily Mail in which she tested a load of cheap wines to see which worked best. The winner was a juicy, deep raspberry-pink Spanish number called Toro Loco which costs £3.69 at Aldi. For the full results of her experiment see her piece – here on ‘sham-pagne…’ Izzy, wizzy, let’s get fizzy.
