I’m in Chile, researching a couple of wine pieces for the Daily Telegraph. I wanted to have a look at Concha y Toro – owners of the phenomenally successful, and extremely good value, Casillero del Diablo and Cono Sur brands. These wines are a very good bet if you have one of those, “aagh, what do I buy from the corner shop” moments and, better than that, are a very reliable supermarket staple. While I’m over here, I’ve been chatting to – and trying the wines of – a few other interesting people. Highlights include the producer De Martino. Also, the Elqui Valley – a mind-blowing place to grow grapes for wine. Think cacti, a sun that burns through factor 40 in a trice, vineyards that climb right up into the Andes, heat, dust, clear skies that draw star-gazers…But words don’t do justice to these vineyard sites. So here’s a picture. The green bits are vines. More on all this in due course. I’m off for a pisco sour.
